A game room is furniture that happens to keep score. The pool table needs real clearance, the card table needs light you can live under, and everyone needs a place to put a drink that is not the felt. If the room also has a TV, park it on a wall that is not the main sightline — otherwise it becomes a second living room with a table in the way.

Design tips
Tip 1
Pool needs about 5 feet of cue room on every side. Measure the empty floor before you fall in love with a 9-foot table.
Tip 2
A 2700–3000K pendant over the table and dimmer wall lights keep faces from looking like a rec center.
Tip 3
Felt is not a coaster. Build a rail or a side table every few feet.
Tip 4
If kids and adults share the room, pick a convertible ping-pong top or a second smaller table rather than blocking the pool table.
